Koenig, Friedrich

Friedrich Koenig (Germany inventor 1977-1833) collaborated with Andreas Bauer, a watch maker, to develop and improve a high speed printing press. It was powered by steam, a technique which had already powered other types of machine within the industrial revolution. The press filled the demand on hand presses by speeding up the printing to over a thousand sheets per hour. Koenig came to London in 1804 to patent his press, it was then sold to the times and the first edition printed in 1814. This was a key evolution in communicating on a major scale and instigating the age of mass media.
